Upper Intermediate Listening

UI-29 The Flight Attendant

I't a native bussiness English dialog about airlines language and also how to behave in the plane. I have listen it for only one time, because though the speech was fast I didn't find it too difficult. Another interesting thing that speakers spelled the unknown words and defining them in English, like for example turbulence and others.

I think this feature is realy useful.

Prisons: San Quentin

The biggest number of crimes is being commited in the United States of America also in the United States capital punishment is legalized. SAN QUENTIN is one of the most famous and notorious prisons in the world.
It was built by inmates who were housed on the prison ship during the construction in 1852 is located in the middle of one of the most affluent areas in the country - California. It has the most remarkable history of violence of any American institution. One cell block is popularly known to inmates as "Little Viet Nam." A particular outdoor passageway as "Death Alley." The latrines as "Okay Corral." Prisoners in other institutions call Quentin -- "THE ARENA."

Every year dozens of men are involved in stabbing incidents many resulting in death. There is no place to run from a threat or an enemy or from those whose tension, fear, and paranoia have become a way of life. San Quentin has a bloody reputation, a culture where violence and boredom make up life day-by-day, where gang culture, rape and silence runs deep. Guards know that inmates can make a weapon out of anything and often they do.

One of many notable inmates Richard Ramirez who is a convicted serial killer awaiting execution on California’s death row at San Quentin. Prior to his capture, Ramirez was dubbed the “Night Stalker” by the news media as he terrorized California with a series of a car and home abducts rapes and murders during the first half of 1985.
A stunning fact is that one of the female jurors who voted to convict him of 13 murders later fell in love with him and they pursued a prison relationship for a while. She wrote him nearly 75 letters during his incarceration, then after seven years Ramirez proposed to her and they were married in San Quentin. Doreen Lioy has stated that she will commit suicide when Ramirez is executed.

Conflict: Definition

I would like to pay attention on a different meanings of only one simple word - "conflict".
A word "conflict" can be realized in many different aspects. For example it could be realized as a state of open, often prolonged fighting; a battle or war that happens between countries. During these kind of conflicts hundreds and thousands of people have been slaughtered in whole world. In my opinion mankind should avoid that kind of disputes.
"A conflict also exists when two people wish to carry out acts which are mutually inconsistent. They may both want to do the same thing, such as eat the same apple, or they may want to do different things where the different things are mutually incompatible, such as when they both want to stay together but one wants to go to the cinema and the other to stay at home".(M.Nicholson: Rationality and the Analysis of International Conflict. 1992:11) Such gentle conflict can be resolved when some mutually compatible set of actions is worked out. They are not dangerous, though you don't know what may happen if for example on of the two people is intoxicated or similar.
In poetry a conflict is opposition between characters or forces in a work of drama or fiction, especially opposition that motivates or shapes the action of the plot. Following conflict is not dangerous as it is contrived.

Gun Control: Virginia Shootings

After the Virginia Tech tragedy, the issue of gun control is again on the minds of many people in the whole world, though not everyone concludes that tighter gun controls might prevent more gun deaths, some of them argue that if only students had been allowed to take their own arms into classrooms, they could have fought back. In my personal opinion this kind of statement is shocking as well as the law in United States that permits everyone to carry a gun.
This is super national for those who are living on this side of the Atlantic.

Virginia requires residents to present two forms of identification to buy a gun, as well pass a computerized background check, meanwhile in Lithuania firstly you have to pass a psychological test and many more and after that there still is a question of getting a licence to a gun.
If such remedies could be taken in United States, the number of rampage killings might decrease.

Internet Fraud

The term internet fraud reffers to any type of crime that refers deceiving online.
Internet frauds can be commited by using in several different internet components, such as chat rooms, e-mails, message boards, online bank accounts and other.
Why internet froud is so special? Well, the answer is actually very simple. As a rule things online tend to happen more quickly than in the real world. During the last few years there has been an increase in online fraud, becouse nowadays criminals take advantage of the Internet's unique capabilities for example, by sending e-mail messages worldwide in seconds, or posting Web site information that is readily accessible from anywhere in the world - to carry out various types of fraudulent schemes more quickly than was possible with many fraud schemes in the past.
So we have a right to be suspicious. Most users of the Internet are nice people but, as in any large population, detestable creeps sometimes emerge from the shadows.

Employment Law Summary

A text describes the principles of tort and contract - the basic elements of employment law. Due to employees weaker economic position, they have more legal rights than self-employed. There are eight employee rights emphasized in the text. The right for workers to strike, the right to safe and healthy workplace, the right of equal work opportunities for men and women, the right for women to be re-employed after having a baby, the right to receive payment for overtime work, the right of early-warning before dismissal, the right of minimum wages for all workers and also the right for unfair dismissal as well as the right to dismiss before stated retirement age.
Yet EC law differ form English by having a Sunday trading. Sometimes it gives a better protection than English law.
Finally, after comparison of employment law in Japan it seams that it is better to live in England, for the sole purpose of short working hours.
